Is WXPR part of Wisconsin Public Radio (the state network)?
No, it is not. WXPR is an independent, community-licensed station, while the state network is licensed to the University of Wisconsin.
WXPR receives no funding whatsoever from the state of Wisconsin, while your state tax dollars do go to Wisconsin Public Radio.
WXPR is listener supported and the license is actually held by members of the station (anyone who contributes $25+ in a year). This means that the members elect the board of directors of White Pine Community Broadcasting, who in turn hire the Station Manager.
How come you have so many different styles of music? Why can't it be all classical or jazz or blues or ??
WXPR has eight music formats: big band, classical, folk, blues, new age, bluegrass, polka and jazz. WXPR broadcasts to a rural area, with a fairly small listening audience. The station would not be viable if it specialized in just one format.
In addition, WXPR strives to meet the needs of its listeners by providing them the type of music they want to hear and an alternative to the other formats of music available in the listening area.
