Events Focus Attention On Domestic Violence

Posted 10/04/2012

A spokesperson says events are planned to bring awareness to the local problem of domestic violence.

Elizabeth Lowenberg from Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault says Monday at Stevensport Square in Rhinelander is an event called the "Chalkwalk"...

"....we honor any victims of domestic violence who lost their lives the previous year. We have a ceremony to honor them. Then we take some sidewalk chalk and then we recreate some images and phrases of empowerment..."

37 people in Wisconsin lost their lives in domestic violence-related crimes in 2011, with one in five of the victims under age five.

October 10th, the agency has designated "Purple Day" where the public is asked to to wear purple as a reminder of someone who has died from domestic violence. Lowenberg says they will be in the region talking about domestic violence, hoping to get health care professionals to be aware of patients concerns...

".....what we're really looking at is health care professionals, what they can do or say, to let their patients know that they are someone they can talk to, to open that conversation up...."

Information is available at the Tri-County Council offices in Rhinelander, Crandon and Eagle River. Their number is 800-236-1222.
