August Northwoods Unemployment Reported

Posted 10/06/2012

Iron county has the state's second highest rate at 10.6 percent. Forest county has the third highest rate at 9.5 percent and Lincoln is fourth at 9.6 percent. Langlade county's rate is 8.6 percent, while Oneida's rate is 7.8 percent and Vilas is at 7.7 percent. Price county has a seven percent rate. All the rates are close to where they were one year ago, but they all fell from one year ago.

Department of Workforce Development Economist John Westbury says the next couple of months will find a more accurate representation of jobless levels as county-level data arrives. But he says while the state, overall, lagged in job creation, the Northwoods saw more employment..

"....(there has been) a decrease in the month-to-month unemployment rate for(the Northwoods) which is encouraging to see. What is really encouraging, thinking about the month-to-month changes, is from July to August you saw decrease in the unemployment rate(for the Northwoods) but for the state as a whole, you saw a slight uptick..."

Menominee county has the state'e highest rate at more than 21 percent. Dane county has the lowest rate at 5 percent.
