Heavy Metal Tour About Kids In Manufacturing

Posted 10/06/2012

It's about getting young people interested in manufacturing careers....but a rock band will be there to play.

Joe Hegge from Grow North Regional Economic Development says 350 eighth graders from nearly all the area school districts will converge on Nicolet College to learn more about manufacturing careers...

"....they'll be meeting at Nicolet College, then by groups in buses they will be touring six industries in the Rhinelander area and learning...about the changing workplace in manufacturing..."

Some manufacturing sectors need skilled workers and Hegge says the idea is to influence kids early...

"....I think our manufacturers would tell you that if you are going to influence decisions about what a young person might want to do, they need to start at a fairly early(age), and thus the request to have eighth-graders tour...."

The rock band Loose Change will play during lunchtime.

The event is co-sponsored by Grow North, Nicolet Area Technical College, North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board and area manufacturers.

October is National Manufacturing Month.
