Rhinelander Residents Visit Oak Creek Temple
Posted 10/09/2012
Six Rhinelander-area residents were warmly welcomed recently at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek where a gunman killed six Temple members and was himself shot to death.
The shooting August 5 received national news attention.
Most of the visitors are from St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Rhinelander...as part of a tour of sacred sites. Church member Ed Hughes says the group asked permission to visit and were welcomed in. He says it happened on a day of another visitor...
''....we we arrived there, we found our arrival was co-incident with the arrival of the Indian Minister for External Affairs who came to the Temple just as we were leaving..."
Hughes says Temple members welcomed the members from outside, even with the tragedy still fresh in their minds...
"....I didn't see bullet holes, but the six people who died have their pictures in a memorial inside the Temple near where their alter is(located.)...it's very moving..."
Hughes says he took away from the visit is regardless of the differences in appearance, the people he met are like people anywhere in Wisconsin.
Also attending were WXPR volunteers Walt and Donna Gager, Linda Hutchinson, Diane Willete along with Hughes and his spouse Bobbalee.
