Phelps Looking For Expanded Broadband
Posted 10/13/2012
Colin Snook says developing broadband is vital for economic development and educational opportunities. He says it's one of the most important things to get done in Phelps...
"....we have a wireless provider that is doing a great job in some of the outlying areas and they also cover the downtown area, along with Verizon, Frontier and we've got Charter coming in now. Those folks are covering the immediate downtown area. There are several areas, farther out, that are not being covered at all..."
Snook says a town committee is exploring options available..
"....if we can find key locations to put up new towers, the town has a serious interest in paying to put up those new towers and work with property owners to purchase property, or to lease the property to create some sort of exhange...to create a 'win-win' situation..."
Snook says if the conscensus is to have the towers, they would then work with private providers to bring the service to unserved areas.
He says discussions have been on-going for more than a year. He says there is potential to collaborate with other towns to get a regional approach to getting high-speed Internet to unserved areas.
Three Lakes in Oneida county has developed what is being called "the Three Lakes model" to provide broadband to most of the town residents.
