No Ice Castle In Eagle River This Year
Posted 01/08/2013
Eagle River Fire Chief Pat Weber says Mother Nature has cooperated again this year and time has run out. He says they need at least a foot of ice on Silver Lake to have a successful construction.....
"....we're really at the merce of Mother Nature. It just seems like in the last few years it's been like a roller coaster...ideally we like to be out there right after Christmas scoring the ice and hauling it off the last few days of December...."
Volunteers chop it into blocks, and take it to downtown Eagle River where the ice castle is built. The Eagle River Chamber-of-Commerce and Visitor's Bureau says the ice is only nine-inches thick – so the project had to be canceled. The Eagle River Ice Palace has been a tradition for over 80 years, when the weather allows it. Weber says in the past decade the castle has been hit-or-miss. It hasn't been built the last two years.
