Workers To Count Northwoods Homeless
Posted 01/19/2013
The count is set for January 30. Lori Hallas from Forward Services Corporation says staff and volunteers will count persons in shelters for that night and attempt to locate people living on the streets, under bridges or similar places...
"....we have a list of places we check in each of our cities we go out in. Those include Eagle River, Crandon, Minocqua, Rhinelander and Antigo..."
The data collected is reported to state agencies, and eventually to federal agencies. Hallas says it gives a snapshot of the Northwoods homeless population every six months.
She says it is also coupled with an event at St. Augustine Church in Rhinelander. The Episcopal church offers a free meal called "The Table"...
"....I called Father Einerson at St. Augustine's church to see if we could partner with "TheTable" to see if we could set up a resource table for people coming to "The Table" that night and just be able to share resources and information..."
The Northern Wisconsin Initiative to Stop Homelessness Continuum of Care began in late 2009. The group raises awareness concerning homelessness in Forest, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas counties.
