Cuts Costing Wisconsin In Smoking Rating

Kostrova says funding cutbacks are hurting local efforts to reach young people with the anti-smoking message. The Oneida County Health Department is the lead agency for a six-county coalition working toward tobacco control. She says they have a full-time person and a part-time person to run programs in Forest, Florence, Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln and Price counties.

She says programs for youth have been cut...

 

The American Lung Association is out with the "State of Tobacco Control 2013." The report tracks progress on key tobacco control policies at the federal and state levels.

Niki Kostrova from the Oneida County Health Department outlines the results...

"....we got an "A" for smoke-free air and a "B" for cigarette tax. However because of (budget) cuts to the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program, we received an "F" in program funding and smoking cessation..."

"....it's difficult to keep up the the Big Tobacco companies who continue to introduce new products that are targeting our kids. They have candy-flavored packing and dissolvable tobacco products...."
