Hospital Group VP Please With Walker Move
Posted 02/12/2013
Governor Walker announced in Rhinelander Monday his budget will promote programs at the state's two medical schools to help fix a rural and inner-city doctor shortage.
The WHA's Eric Borgerding says Walker's proposal expands the entire medical education process.....
"....expanding our educational capacity at our two medical schools all the way to providing much needed assistance for creating residency slots, those are the clinical training opportunities..."
Borgerding says Wisconsin needs more residency slots. He says where a physician completes residency often leads to the doctor staying to practice. Borgerding says unless something changed, Wisconsin would have had a net physician shortage nearing 2000 by the year 2030. He says he's hearing from state hospitals some types of doctors are already in short supply...
"....our members who are really struggling to recruit primary care docs, family practice docs, internists, general surgeons, psychiatrists....family medicine physicians. Those are five areas we know where we have tremendous need...."
Walker made the announcement as part of funding proposals to boost Wisconsin's work force.
