Wabeno Schools Head To Referendum

Posted 03/09/2013

Wabeno voters will decide on a non-recurring three-year referendum asking for one-million, 50 thousand dollars for the first year, one-million, 300 thousand dollars for the second year, and one-million, 500 thousand dollars for the third year.

District Administrator Kim Odekirk says like many Northwoods schools, they are being hurt by declining enrollment which cuts back on state aids...

"....we still have a very low mill rate in our school district. Our mill rate is currently at 6.17. With this referendum, if indeed it does pass, our taxpayers would be looking at the mill rate going up to 6.73, which in the scheme of things does not look like a huge jump..."

Odekirk says this is the first time Wabeno voters will decide on a referendum. She says if it doesn't pass, cuts in programs offered will likely occur and larger class sizes. More information on the referendum is on the Wabeno schools website.

We'll have more with Kim Odekirk at 7:30 Tuesday morning during Morning Edition
