en.wikipedia.org

A Rhinelander Police sergeant will lead a class next week to train the public on what to do if there's an active shooter near you.

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events course is open to the public says Oneida County Department on Aging Director Dianne Jacobson...

"...The Oneida County Department on Aging is happy to partner with the Rhinelander Police Department to offer a general public session on the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events. People of all ages are welcome to attend this free event. Sergeant Angela Mertz is certified in this training and it's a good way to learn the things you need to know if you find yourself in that situation...."

Jacobson says it's a classroom style presentation is geared to the general public protecting themselves...

"...No one thinks you're crazy for having a fire extinguisher in your house. So why not be prepared for other emergencies?..."

Participants will learn about Avoid-Deny-Defend, a three-step plan for survival during an active shooter event. The training is Friday, August 24 from  1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Oneida County Senior Center in Rhinelander. Jacobson says while the training is free, registration is requested. Call the Department on Aging for more information.
