One of 18 walks in this region to raise funds to battle Alzheimer's disease happens Saturday in Rhinelander. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S, and the only one in the top 10 causes that can't be cured, prevented or slowed.
Abbe Klein from the Greater Wisconsin Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association says the Walk To End Alzheimer's is their largest fundraiser each year...
"....it raises funds and awareness for research, care and support services, our advocacy. We like to call it the worlds largest support network. It brings a lot of families and caregivers together. Families with loved ones with the disease. People who do have early stage Alzheimer's and dementia. It's a safe place for everyone to get together, share their stories and build a support network...."
Participants will complete either a one or three miles walk. Klein says walkers will also join a tribute ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease. She outlines how money is raised....
"....people can register either as an individual or a team or as a virtual walker. If you're not able to make the actual walk. You can sign up at our website and create a fundraising page. It does not cost any money to register, but we encourage people to donate and to raise funds. It raises funds prior to the walk and we also accept donations day of...."
