East Side Rejected, West Side Favored For Eagle River Dog Park

Ken Anderson photo

The Eagle River dog park committee made an on-site visit to a third potential location on airport property Thursday on the east side of Adams Road but felt the area was too small and too close to a major highway, thereby favoring the airport property west of Bolte Road and north of Illinois Street.

While the east site was about three acres, the west site is 26 acres which allows room for future expantion of trails and the opportunity for an area for smaller and older dogs. Distances from homes along the Wisconsin River range from 1,437 feet to 1,836 feet distance from the proposed fenced area.

The committee discussed gathering various examples of dog park rules and annual or daily user fees. They expressed a long range goal to be self-funded and how to raise initial monies for fencing, parking, water source, and disposal of droppings was discussed with suggestions of contacting community service organizations, veterinary clinics, and others.

The committee will seek the ok from the airport commission to use the property and then go to the city plan commission for a recommendation to the city council.
