Fencing Around Eland CWD Deer Without Problems

fr.wikipedia.org

A DNR spokesperson says they have worked standard protocols to contain Chronic Wasting Disease from a deer at a farm south of Antigo.

81 deer from Wilderness Whitetails shooting preserve near Eland have been quarantined by the state. A five year old buck at the preserve tested positive for CWD after it was shot last November.

DNR Wildlife Section Chief Tami Ryan says they checked the fences at the farm at Eland and a related farm in Portage county and the fences were in good shape....

?

"....they did find all of the fencing to be in good repair, so that was good news...

?

She says around the deer hunting season they asked area hunters to voluntarily submit samples to be tested. Just this month, they took more actions...

?

"...so there is a new baiting and feeding ban for deer in Waupaca and Shawano counties. Marathon county is the facility in which this facility is located. That(county) already had a baiting and feeding ban,...."

Rules kick in when a positive finding of CWD is determined, so Marathon county where the farm is located already had a baiting and feeding ban. Ryan says as of last week, there have been no reports of any other diseased deer.

The Eland deer was the first captive deer in five years to be diagnosed with the fatal brain disease.
