Forum Looks At Iron Co. Forest Land Removal

A recently-formed group has set up an educational forum next week on how county forest land will be involved in a proposed mine project.

Iron County has a portion of the proposed Penokee Hills mine.

Terry Daulton of Mercer is part of the Iron County Citizen's Forum which is sponsoring the event next Wednesday. Daulton says these forums are aimed at educating the public on issues...

"Either on natural resource, cultural or sustainable development issues. And one of the first topics that we chose was to get some speakers to come in and talk about the county forest lands that are proposed up here for withdrawal for the mining proposal, and also the process for how those county forests would be withdrawn."

Daulton says the county forest land remains an unknown to the public...

"The mining company has requested a lease option on over 3000 acres of county forest, and many people here have never even seen the land or know really the details of what kind of resources are there. They just give people kind of a snapshot of what's there and how the public can become involved in the discussion."

Iron County Forest Administrator Joe Vairus and DNR Bureau of Forestry specialist Joe Schwantes will speak.
