Heal Creek Property Gets Three Proposals From Two Parties

Oneida county has opened two, and possibly three bids from governments or organizations interested in the Heal Creek property on Rhinelander's far west side.

The county and the Economic Development Corporation spent $520,000 in an effort to construct a 'green' business park on the 272-acre  property. When no development took place, the county board asked for bids to buy the property immediately east of the Northwood Golf Course.

The county's Land Information Director Mike Romportl  says two, possibly three, offers were received. Two of the proposals were from Hodag Sports Club. The other proposal was a joint proposal from the town of Crescent and the city of Rhinelander. The sports club is kitty-korner to the property and would like to buy a portion or all the property. One proposal would buy the most easterly 40's, with the second offer to buy the entire acreage.

Romportl describes the Crescent/Rhinelander proposal..

"....and they were looking at primarily the use of the property for recreational purposes, silent sports activities...."

That proposal would be for a trade of a Rhinelander parcel valued at $90,000 and add $10,000 from the town of Crescent with money raised from a timber sale.

The Hodag Sports Club would buy the entire property for 282,000 or the eastern portion only for $82,000. Both offers would include being part of the state's managed forest land program.

A key issue is access, with the property's main access point through the Northwoods Golf Course. The county committee will look at the offers one more time then make a recommendation to the full county board in the early spring.
