Meeting Wednesday Focuses On CWD In Lincoln, Oneida Counties

Wisconsin DNR

The discovery of CWD infected deer in Lincoln and Oneida counties has prompted the DNR to hold a public meeting Wednesday in Tomahawk to discuss what that means for hunters and others.

DNR staff, along with Lincoln, Oneida, and Langlade County Deer Advisory Councils will host that meeting. DNR Area Wildlife Supervisor Chuck McCullough  says the positive CWD deer were found in the town of Harrison in Lincoln county, and the town of Crescent in Oneida county. He says they will discuss the extent of the disease on the landscape.

He says they would like to get a significant sample number of deer to see the extent of the problem..

"...Our goal would be to get as close to 450 samples within a 10 mile radius of those known positives this fall. We want to talk about some of the possibilities....."

McCullogh says the focus of the meeting will be on getting the needed samples. Recently, the Natural Resources Board approved changes aimed at containing the spread of the fatal disease among deer. He says they will answer those questions, but the focus will be on Lincoln and Oneida counties...

"....Our intention is to talk about getting samples this fall from hunter killed deer in that circle around that Harrison and Crescent township area. I'm sure those questions will come up, we'll be prepared to answer them. The primary purpose is to talk about the new hotspot we have and what we're going to do in the immediate future...."

The meeting will take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Tomahawk High School, Auditorium.
