New Transit Manager Tells Oneida Board He's Proud To Help Less Fortunate

Northwoods Transit Connections

The Oneida County Board this week heard from the new manager of Northwoods Transit Connections and he appreciates being close to home.

Roger Youngren has a long history of maritime shipping experience. He grew up in Kingsford, Michigan and received a degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He had several executive jobs in the Marine Terminal Sector on the east coast. He also worked as a safety expert, and has a background in non-profits as well.

He says he's been riding on the buses of the service for Vilas and Oneida counties...

"....It's a very gratifying role serving the communities, the counties of Oneida and Vilas. I've been on the buses, meeting our people, meeting the customers, getting to know our personnel. I've met some people who are less fortunate. I'm proud of what we do to give those customers to get them to and from their medical appointments, shopping, what have you...."

Youngren was hired in August after Jim Altenburg resigned last February. The service hired a manager shortly after the service organized in 2015, but that person resigned after only a month. Altenburg served for two years. In the interim, Bay Area Rural Transit helped out to keep the service going in the two counties.

Ridership numbers for the first half of the year are rounded off here, but found 3,300 riders in January, 3,400 in February, nearly 3,000 in March, 2,700 in April, 3,300 in May and and June each.
