Second Democrat Announces 34th Candidacy

Facebook page

A second Democrat has announced for the 34th Assembly seat.

27 year old Matthew Michalsen is a teacher and coach at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua and serves on the Lake Tomahawk town board. He's a graduate of UW-Stevens Point.

Michaelsen says he will focus on rural economic development, shoreland zoning issues, local control, tourism, opportunities for young people, and education. He says the issue of local control for rural Wisconsin is a key issue...

"....I believe the Republican Party is not doing what they tend to preach about community and personal responsibility. I believe they're stripping the local control away from the townspeople, the great people of the Northwoods and being put back into the hands of state bureaucrats..."

He says as a teacher he sees young people who want to stay here, but see limited economic possibilities. He says he comes from blue collar roots. The second candidate to announce for the Democratic nomination is Lawrence Dale of Eagle River. Republican Rob Swearingen of Rhinelander is the incumbent.
