Transfer of Eagle River Library Takes Big Step Forward

Ownership of the Eagle River Library property should soon be transferred to the Town of Lincoln. That means plans to expand the library are getting closer to reality.

Construction plans for Eagle River’s Olson Memorial Library took a big step forward last night when the Eagle River Planning Commission voted unanimously to rezone the land on which the library sits. Olson Memorial Library land was zoned as Office Residential and Single Family Residential. The Planning Commission approved the motion to rezone the land as Government Use. This recommendation must be confirmed by the City Council on Monday.

Laurie Stoegbauer, President of the Library Trustees, emerged smiling from the meeting.

“What it means is that the city is now ready to move forward with the town of Lincoln’s request that the property be zoned government so they will accept the property and we can move forward with construction of the library.”

Lincoln is already the library’s fiscal agent. The process of planning a new library has already been more than 3 years in the making, Stoegbauer says.

The average library user won’t see a difference in the change of ownership, though they may see some other changes soon. Nan Anderson, director of the Olson Memorial Library, explained tonight’s progress.

“It means that we’ve taken care of all of the pieces that are needed to move forward into the planning and the finalizing of the construction plans for the library so we’re going to be seeing some action now and movement of that building and we’re very excited about that.”

Look for more announcements on the start of construction in the coming months.
