Volunteers Needed To Build Snowmy Kromer

Minocqua Chamber of Commerce

The conditions are right with our mountains of recent snow, so a large snow sculpture is about to be built in front of the Mincoqua Chamber of Commerce.

The 30-foot-tall snowman Snowmy Kromer will be built next week.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Krystal Westfahl says the mild and dry weather of December and January made it look like Snowmy wasn't going to happen. But she says with the big dumps of snow, Snowmy will become a reality.

Volunteers and some local businesses make it happen, says Westfahl...

"...We have to set up fencing to keep the snow in and help form. But then, from then on out, it's really all about four or five people stomping the snow into place. Schrom's Excavating comes and moves all the snow into the fencing and pats it down with their backhoe..."

The Minocqua Fire Department sprays the structure down so it freezes, as Westfahl says, 'like a big white wedding cake'.

Later, the mega-large Stormy Kromer hat is placed on his head, and the buttons and decorations...

"..When we put him up in 2015, this was the first time we put him up in front of the chamber of commerce, we did it on a whim. We had a lot of great snow, so lets just see what happens. That year he went viral on social media. He went around the world. We had people calling from places like Nova Scotia and Singapore saying they had seen him on TV. He made his way around the world...."

Westfahl is making a call for volunteers to come by the Chamber of Commerce offices Monday and Tuesday (2/18-2/19) to help with building Snowmy. She asks you call the chamber office or go to their website to reserve a time when you can stomp snow.
