Manufacturing wasn't as robust in the region as years earlier according to state numbers.

Mitchell Rupp is a state labor economist in Wausau. He took a look at Northwoods manufacturing

. The latest data comes from late 2107 and early 2018...

"....If we look at the number of establishments, overall, either they stayed the same or decreased. Forest county, Vilas county and Lincoln county showed no decrease over the course of that period. Langlade county decreased by one establishment and Oneida county decreased by three establishments...."

In monthly employment in the manufacturing sector, the five counties he profiled, Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln, Langlade and Forest saw a decrease in average monthly employment.

Rupp says that quarterly trend reflected a slight decrease across Wisconsin during late 2017 and 2018....

"....The number of establishments decreased by 12 across Wisconsin, average monthly employment decreased by 18 and average weekly wage decreased by six. While the numbers decreased for the five county area, the same was going on for the state as a whole..."

But more recent numbers from the Department of Workforce Development finds the state added 21,300 manufacturing jobs from July 2017 through July 2018. The state also reports initial unemployment insurance claims ended 2017 at their lowest level in the last 30 years.Continuing unemployment claims ended 2017 at their lowest level since 1973.
