What To Do With Unsolicited Seed Packets And 'Brushing'

Wikipedia

There have been numerous reports of people receiving unsolicited seeds by mysterious packages from China. A  Wisconsin consumer protection specialist has some advice if you get a packet in the mail.

Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Tricia Collins has some advice..

"So if you receive one of these packages, don't throw away the seeds. If you've already planted them, leave them in place until you get further guidance. If you still have the packaging, hold onto that. If they come in sealed packing keep (seeds) inside the packaging if possible.."

Collins says there might be a more far-reaching effort involved called a 'brushing' scam which might involve seeds or other unsolicited cheap trinkets you get in the mail...

"What happens with a 'brushing' scam is the vendor trying to sell their product will send out these packages and post a review in the consumers name. So they're posting a favorable review and increasing sales so that results in an increased visibility on line..."

The vendor then posts your name as a satisfied customer of the product you never sought. Collins says keep it or toss it but you shouldn't be billed for it. She says just to be safe, if you've recently placed an online order, go back and change your password. She says mostly likely the vendor got your name and address from a public source.

She says if these unsolicited items show up, file a complaint with the Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection Consumer Protection Division(website) or call the DATCP hotline below.
