Study Wants To Add Three Deputies To VC Sheriff's Dept.

Wikmedia Commons

The Vilas County law enforcement committee recently supported requesting three new deputy sheriff positions next year.

The hires are based on a staffing study by the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.

Vilas County Sheriff Joe Fath felt asking for one would more likely be approved, rather than three.

Committee member Todd Achterberg disagreed, saying the committee should follow the recommendation.

Achterberg quoted the number one recommendation in the studies conclusion saying there was a minimum need for three.

Sheriff Fath said in 1981 there were 18 deputies and today, thirty years later there's 20.

Other committee members agreed the need was there and the staffing study should be supported. The committee approved asking for three and will return next month with some minor language changes in a proposed county board resolution.
