WXPR's Ken Krall spoke with Dr. Charles Shabino of Wausau, who is Wisconsin Hospital Association chief medical officer and the Board Chairman of the Wisconsin Council On Medical Education Workforce, the group that authored a recent report on physician retention.
Of particular concern is finding and keeping doctors in rural areas....
Shabino says Wisconsin has also made significant progress expanding medical school class size at both the Medical College of Wisconsin which has opened two new campuses, and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health which has gradually increased the class size of their program, the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine, since its inception in 2007. Shabino says they have increased school capacity in Wisconsin schools by about 50 physicians a year.
