Two Langlade County non-profits are collecting electronic waste in a special event this weekend.
Good News Project in Wausau and AVAIL of Antigo is accepting electronics Friday and Saturday morning at the Langlade County Fairgrounds Multipurpose Building.
Good News Project Director Bettina Peters talks about the items they accept...
“…we’ll be collecting all kinds of electronics; computers, TVs, printers, fax machines, microwaves, dehumidifiers, laptops…all that stuff. It costs 40 cents a pound for recycling. Broken TVs are the exception; those are 60 cents a pound.”
Peters says all proceeds from the event will benefit AVAIL and Good News Project. She says they take e-waste each Friday, but host collection days during the weekend once each quarter for people who can’t make it during the week.
Peters says computers, TVs, cell phones and other electronics contain valuable materials that can be recovered through recycling. Electronics also contain potentially hazardous materials, such as lead and mercury that can pose a risk to human health and the environment if not properly managed.
Collection times are Friday from 11 to 4 and Saturday from 9 to noon.
