1,400 Area Lions Meet This Weekend In Lac du Flambeau

Lions Club International

There will be a lot of Lions in the Northwoods this weekend. More than 200 Lions and guests from 8 Northwoods counties will be at Lake of the Torches Casino in Lac du Flambeau Friday and Saturday.

District Governor Collette Sorgel of Three Lakes says the convention is designed for Lions in the Northwoods to exchange information about projects they're working on to serve their communities better.

The Three Lakes Lions are the host club for the convention.

She says the Lions continue to focus on vision screening...

"...One of the things we have for the convention is we have training for new Lions who want to become vision screeners for adults and for training children...here in Three Lakes we screen all the children in the district annually to help identify anyone who has a need...."

Sorgel says certified trainers come to the convention and train Lions clubs members on how to accurately do vision screening. The trainers come from the group Prevent Blindness.

She says they will be handing out a number of awards and also have another highlight which is a presentation on Leader Dogs For The Blind..

"...the leader dog she is training now, a puppy, and she's bringing a leader dog recipient for one of the puppies she's trained in the past. Those are always nice times to learn how it works to learn the stories behind the people who are using the leader dogs..."

There are about 1,400 Lions members in this area.
