Announcement Leaves Uncertain Future For Flambeau River Papers

Flambeau Rivers Papers

Changes announced this week at Flambeau River Papers in Park Falls likely means an uncertain future for workers.

The company announced it would close another line and prepare to sell the business. The company blamed declining paper markets for the move. Another paper machine will be shut down.

Last year, the company laid off 82 employees as it closed one of the mill's three paper lines. In the press release, Flambeau River Papers CEO Butch Johnson said "a smaller, but more focused FRP should enhance our ability to find the right buyer."

Under Chapter 128 of state law, a receiver will be appointed to oversee FRP's operations while preparing for a sale.

FRP said no layoffs are expected within the next 60 days. Before the 2018 layoffs, almost 300 people worked at the company.
