Area High Schoolers Compete To See Education, Jobs Future

Terry Rutlin Nicolet Area Technical College

187 high school students from 13 different districts and the Blackwell Job Corp were at Nicolet College Thursday to hold a friendly competition.

Competition Day has students compete in 10 different academic areas, including welding, crime scene investigations, health occupations and cupcake wars.

Nicolet Career Coach Angeline von Neupert says a few years ago the college welding instructors would invite students in to compete against other schools. Later more areas were added...

"..In about two hours they are tasked at completing their competition, so, for example, four cupcake wars, they have to decorate and create a theme, have frosting recipes and what-not. Another is our public safety challenge which features EMS work, fire protection work and public safety. It's a challenge course where they're running up the fire tower and rescuing somebody..."

She says the competition gives students a chance to see a glimpse of another career that they wouldn't necessarily get in a school setting.

"Today I think is a peek at an opportunity as to what an education looks like at Nicolet. Some of the areas are skills based. In other areas it's a great opportunity to meet the instructors. Some of our students are volunteering for the day. So it really depends on each area what the students will see, but it could be a hint at what that career looks like...."

von Neupert says Competition Day is rapidly expanding. She hopes next year to invited the public to the awards ceremony. She says employers and businesses in the Nicolet College district contributed thousands of dollars worth of prizes, including a full welder that goes to the top welding school, scholarships to Nicolet and other items.
