ArtsDay Wisconsin Tuesday Has Legislature's Ear

Arts Wisconsin

Tuesday is Arts Day in Wisconsin. It's the annual gathering of arts enthusiasts from across the state who come to Madison to promote the arts statewide...

"...Hundreds of people from around the state come to speak up for the arts. To celebrate all that the arts and creativity do for people, organizations, businesses and communities and to make sure the decision makers in the state capitol know that too..."

But this year is different, says Anne Katz of Arts Wisconsin. She says they've gotten the ear of the legislature..

"...an Assembly committee meeting on the arts and community development. There's a new committee, the Committee on Community Development and they're having a hearing on the connection of the arts and community. We have two hours worth of speakers from around the state....speaking about what is going on..."

Katz says after the informational hearing there will be a public hearing where more communities will be heard from. Arts enthusiasts are encouraged to meet with their elected representatives. Katz has been the leader in promoting the arts as community development.

The main events will be at the Overture Center For the Arts. Secretary of the Department of Tourism Sara Meaney and new Wisconsin Poet Laureate Margaret Rozga are featured speakers. Faye Williams of DePere is the Arts Day Artist-in-Residence. Katz says the Northwoods is well represented with arts centers in several communities. More information is at artswisconsin.org
