ATV Trails Opening In CNNF Damaged By July Storms

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest-U.S. Forest Service

Enough progress has been made in the clean up of the July blowdown areas of Langlade and Oconto counties that the Forest Service has reopened most ATV trails.

Chequamegon- Nicolet National Forest spokesperson Hilary Markin says local clubs and Forest Service employees have been working toward getting the trails reopened...

"...All the ATV trails on the Lakewood-Laona district...we have just about all of them open again. There's one small area of trail that is closed near Jessie Lake. That was one of our hardest hit areas along the Langlade-Oconto county line. But everything else in the district is open and ready for people to enjoy for the weekend..."

She says for now, ATV riders are asked to also look up when driving and be extra cautious...

"...Take it a little bit slower, make sure you go around corners slow, in case there's a large tree down over the trail that wasn't there before. Even if you've ridden the trail earlier in the day and you're headed back, we've seen(trees) come down during the day, whether it's wind or rain...or it's the last straw that's keeping it upright, it decided to come down..."

Markin says they're also looking towards winter, and the Forest is coordinating with the counties and snowmobile clubs for the clearing of snowmobile trails. She says additional information will be shared regarding the status of trails as winter approaches.

A map showing ATV trails on the Forest as well as roads and their use designations can be found in the Chequamegon-Nicolet’s Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) at their website. We have a link here.
