Starjournalnow.com

Rhinelander resident Bill Vancos has been given AARP Wisconsin's top honor, the "2019 Andrus Award for Community Service".

Vancos has worked as a volunteer for many years primarily with the AARP Tax-Aide program, the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and Rhinelander Historical Society among other efforts.

Vancos is a life-long Rhinelander resident and worked for many years at Wausau Paper's Rhinelander mill.

AARP Wisconsin spokesperson, Jim Flaherty says Vancos shows the many positive traits of a great volunteer...

"....His work with the AARP Tax Aide program is fantastic, in addition to his work with the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and the Historical Society. All of the work Bill has done rolls up into one situation..."

Vancos was asked why he likes to volunteer....

"....I'm not somebody who can sit around, so call it therapeutic, but honestly, it's enjoyable. For those of you who are wondering if you have some free time on your hands, I can't speak enough about volunteering. You meet the nicest people...."

Flaherty says they get many nominations each year but Vancos' work stood out. AARP Wisconsin grants $1,000 to the winner who then designates the money to their favorite non-profit, in this case the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry.
