Blackwell Job Corps Students Complete Campus Project

U.S. Forest Service

Students at the Blackwell Job Corps facility in Forest county have applied some classroom studies to real world skills.

Officials say a 40-foot wide gazebo currently under construction near the student dormitories is a legacy that will be shared by classmates many years into the future.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest spokesperson Hillary Markin says the building had several departments involved...

".....carpentry students were the ones assembling the building, welding class was fabricating the brackets, then they had people from the construction craft, laborers class that demolished the old blacktop, hung up the scaffolding and they will be pouring the concrete this spring....'

Markin says the math teachers were also there talking about the calculations that were used and the designs. She says they also learned about being safe on a construction site. Markin says the students will be able to see a tangible reminder of their education when they see the building being used by others.

"....any time you can build something and come back and see it still standing, that's a pride and accomplishment feeling for those students and it helps boost them and what they're learning to the next level when they go out into the workforce and get real jobs...."

The Forest Service oversees the Job Corps program at the site on County "H" near Laona.
