Council Recommends Increasing Oneida County Deer Herd

Oneida County’s Deer Advisory Council is asking for an increase in the deer herd for the next three years.

The council met last week to finalize its first round of recommendations to the DNR.

As chair Ed Choinski explains, it will be a few months before the council sets specific recommendations for the number of antlerless permits.

“If the winter weather would get real severe like it did last year again, that would play a significant role in the amount of tags we issue. So there’s a lot of things that play into this before we can make our final recommendation.”

Choinski says the council is also asking the DNR for an increase in the number of predator tags available to hunters in Oneida County.

Vilas County is also recommending an increase in deer numbers.

Additional meetings scheduled for February, March and April will determine antlerless deer permit numbers.

It’s the first year of the state’s new deer management structure, which created citizen advisory councils to help shape management goals for each county.
