County Deer Councils to Set Anterless Permit Levels

commons.wikimedia.org

County deer advisory councils will be meeting again this month to help determine antlerless deer quotas.

DNR wildlife biologist Melinda Nelson says each council will recommend a specific number anterless tags.

“Looking at a variety of metrics including winter severity, 2014 deer harvest numbers and taking public input, and deciding how many antlerless tags they want out on the landscape.”

Nelson says the local management units will make initial recommendations, and then take feedback from the public.

The Natural Resources Board approved broad population objectives last month. All northern counties plan to increase the deer herd over the next three years.

But as Nelson explains, increasing the herd doesn’t have to mean zero tags issued for does.

“I’m sure we’ll likely see a few non-quota areas again in the north. The CDACs also have the understanding that we still can get a really good increase while providing permits, just to provide more opportunity, especially for our youth hunters.”

Final permit levels are set to be approved by the state Natural Resources Board in May.

Local meeting times:

Iron County:  Monday, March 23rd at the Mercer Town Hall.

Vilas County: Tuesday, March 24th at the Boulder Junction Community Center.

Forest County: Wednesday, March 25th at the Forest County Courthouse.

Oneida County: Thursday, March 26th at UW Extension.
