We received a Curious North question from Sarah Juon of Rhinelander checking on what precautions should be taken if you're traveling via airplane in light of the Coronavirus outbreak.
We asked Oneida County Public Health Nurse Rebecca Lohagen what things travelers taking flights should do to protect themselves from this respiratory virus. She says you should follow the same types of precautions you would during any flu season...
"If you're sick, cover your cough, you shouldn't be flying. Wear a mask if you're concerned about getting anything from people on the flight. You want to make sure you wash your hands. Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you don't have access to washing your hands while your flying. Make sure if you have a cold or any of those types of symptoms that you're covering your cough. Monitor the people around you to make sure they're doing the same...."
Lohagen says the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention website has more information.
We also asked Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport Director Matthew Leitner about what information has been been put out for the flying public...
"..So right now the TSA has issued an alert for travel to China. Within that alert is some information from the U.S. State Department describing some of the symptoms of the Coronavirus and some precautionary measures people can take to avoid the Coronavirus. Those are posted here in the terminal at the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport..."
