Don't Encourage Hungry Bears To Visit Your Home Says Expert

Wisconsin DNR

Hibernation is done, and Wisconsin's black bears are out and about. With the lack of easy food for them, they often head to places around human habitation and cause problems. Some of the targets for the bruins are bird feeders, garbage cans, grills and uncontained compost or pet food left outside.

DNR wildlife damage specialist Brad Koele says you can cut down your chances of being surprised by a bear....

"...When they're keyed in on a food source they're a little less wary of humans. That's the time you want to be aware of those food sources and remove them and to remove any negative interactions with the bear...."

Koele says the human can get into trouble for feeding the bears...

"It is illegal to feed bear either intentionally or unintentionally. If you have a food source out there like a bird feeder and bears are coming there, it's in your best interest to remove that attractant..."

Koele says if a bear is near your home, wave your arms and make noise to scare it away. He says back away slowly and seek a safe location where you can wait for the bear to leave. He says make sure it has a clear escape route. Never corner the bear. If you encounter a bear while in the woods, stay calm and do not approach the bear. Never approach a sow with cubs, and do not attempt to break up a fight between your pet and a bear.

The department partners with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services to respond to approximately 800 bear-related complaints reported in Wisconsin each year.
