Eagle River Okay's ATVs and UTVs On City Streets

Eagle River businesses can soon look forward to their customers arriving by ATV and UTV. As WXPR's Emily Bright reports, the Eagle River town council has voted to allow ATVs and UTVs on nearly all city streets.

The city of Eagle River passed an ordinance to allow ATVs and UTVs to drive on any designated city street. Nearly all city streets will allow those vehicles, though eager riders will have to wait a week or more until the signs are posted. One hold-up—the city must get permission from Vilas county to allow these vehicles to cross the recreational bridge on highway 45. Ryan Halsey is one UTV user who is happy about the new ordinance.

“It’s great, I can get out there with the kids and the wife and enjoy more of Eagle River. Both myself and my wife are disabled through the military, and I currently cannot ride a snowmobile due to that, so I’d like to have my UTV to be able to ride on the trails.”

ATVs and UTVs are not yet allowed on snowmobile trails. The city council would have to vote in that separately. City councilman Jerry Burkett referred to the map of ATV trails is a “breathing, evolving document”—one that will hopefully give people one more recreational way to access the area.
