The state is stressing the importance of investing in the next generation of groundwater professionals during National Groundwater Awareness Week going on through Saturday.
Begun by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) since 1999, the week-long observance highlights the responsible use of groundwater. A DNR spokesperson says it also serves as a platform to promote yearly well testing to prevent waterborne illnesses.
DNR Groundwater Section Chief Bruce Rheineck,(rine-neck) says groundwater is the drinking water supply for more than two-thirds of state residents. Rheineck says this year's focus is on the importance of building a foundation for the future sustainability of our groundwater...
"We've had a long standing program of providing support to educators in Wisconsin both primary through secondary teachers and naturalists, giving them a curriculum guide and a hands-on groundwater model that they can use and demonstrate just how the water gets there and how you can get it out, whether that's a public municipal well or their own private well..."
Rheineck says that education extends to well drillers and pump installers who know how to make a well safely. He says private well owners should get their water tested...
"Our basic recommendation is everyone test at least annually for bacteria and nitrate..."
Rheineck says test more often if there's been a change such as flooding or the water changes appearance.
