Today, February 9, 2019, we pay tribute to a long-time volunteer at WXPR, Al Eiglmeier. Al died recently after a long battle with cancer. Courtesy the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home, we post his obituary below.
Al hosted the polka show Saturday mornings for many years. He also hosted the program we had on weekday afternoons, "Your Favorites". He brought with him a quick laugh, and a long knowledge of the music. Al was one of the foundation hosts of the polka show. He hosted his last show a couple of years ago as he had to stop because his cancer returned. Al had battled the disease for years, but when he felt better, he was here to host the show.
Al was a talented crafter. Each Christmas he would give the polka folks some ornaments he made by hand. Al gave me one of his signature lamps, made from Lake Superior stones. Today the lamp he gave me is lit in my office in tribute to his work here and his friendship.
Today(Feb.9)we will be featuring music Al recorded solo and with a band during the Polka Show from 9:00 a.m. to noon on WXPR.
We will miss him.
