One goal has been reached and a second goal begins for an Eagle River area group hoping to make sure lower-income kids get food this summer.
FORK--or Feed Our Rural Kids--has a mission to raise money to provide nutritional support to school-aged children from food insecure homes within the Northland Pines School District.
FORK President Perry Pokrandt says they reached their first-year fundraising goal..
"...When we started FORK less than a year ago we laid out a plan for a program called FORK Cares, the delivery of supplemental nutritional packages to children during the summer. We were going to deliver 5,400 meals. The cost of that is $20,000 and we've now made our goal..."
Pokrandt says low-income family kids lose access during the summer to the 10 meals per week offered by the school district. Two supplemental food programs for students during the school year are not available during the summer, so FORK was formed to fill the need. He says volunteers will deliver packages to the homes of the students who have registered. Pokrandt says the goal is to reach 150 kids this summer.
He says they're already planning for the following summer...
"...The FORK Cares program in it's first year was such a success the community wrapped it's arms around it to such a degree that we felt bold enough to plan for a second year. We're really excited to announce our goal is to deliver 10,800 meals..."
That would double this year's effort and enable the volunteers to bring meals twice a month during the summer. Pokrandt says to get more information they can go to feedourruralkids.org
