Gov. Evers Orders Parks And Recreation Areas Open

Wisconsin DNR

At the direction of Governor Evers , the state will reopen 34 state parks this Friday.

The DNR says it will modify current operations to maintain a safe environment for visitors and staff.

Due to crowds, litter, vandalism and the need to protect the health and safety of visitors and staff, Gov. Evers directed the DNR to close 38 Wisconsin State Parks, Forests and Recreational Areas on Friday, April 10.

DNR Secretary Preston Cole said during a press conference with reporters that staff will be working to make sure people going to the parks practice social distancing and by limiting how many people get into the parks...

"We have a responsibility to remind people about social distancing. Our hope is the carrying capacity that we are putting in place that that issue may solve itself merely because of less people in the parks..."

Hours at some parks will be limited.

Northern forests and flowages will be open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week including the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, Willow Flowage, Pike Wild River, Pine-Popple Wild River and others.

DNR boat launches are open at open state properties, but officials say anglers are asked to practice social distancing.

Camping, group camps and shelters will remain closed until May 26. Refunds will be issued to all customers.

Hiking trails remain open.

Restrooms at all state properties will be closed. This includes the closure of restrooms on properties currently open to the public. More information is at the DNR website
