Governments Reorganize, City Attorney Gives Alders Advice

Wikimedia Commons Royalbroil

Two area governmental bodies have reorganized after the controversial spring election held earlier this month.

The Rhinelander City Council will see four new alders. Thomas Barnett, Carrie Mikalauski, Gerald Anderson and Eileen Daniel joined the council.

The new group elected District 8 alder Ryan Rossing as the new Council President, succeeding George Kirby who did not run for reelection.

With a nod to recent controversy regarding open records and outside gatherings by council members, City Attorney Steve Sorenson cautioned the new members to be careful about public records, asking them to do city business on the city-provided email and not their personal email...

"Be really careful if you do with any city business on your personal email address as you suddenly exposed your personal email to an open records request..."

Sorenson also cautioned about gathering together outside of scheduled council proceedings, as that gathering, no matter how casual, could be construed as an illegal meeting which also extends to calling other council members on the phone to relay information.

At the Oneida County Courthouse, the new board reorganized, reelecting incumbent chair David Hintz of Three Lakes for another term as county board leader. Long-time Minocqua area supervisor Billy Fried(freed) of Minocqua was named 1st vice-chair, and Ted Cushing of Hazelhurst at 2nd vice-chair.
