Habitat For Humanity/Rhinelander SD Break Ground

WXPR

A family will be getting a new house next year as Habitat for Humanity Northwoods broke ground on it's 19th house Sunday(9/14) afternoon.

Greg and Jennifer Bohn and their two children will have a home on Rhinelander's west side. But this home has a twist. Routinely the homes are constructed by Habitat volunteers. But a collaboration with the Rhinelander School District means Building Trades students will build the house for  Habitat.

Habitat Executive Director Bob Davis says their chapter serves Vilas and Oneida counties and if you look at the economic numbers there is a real need for quality housing.....

".... I think the median income in both Vilas and Oneida county is in the $26,000 a year neighborhood. It doesn't take long to do the math. So when you look at the affordability for people who have the desire to have a nice home for their families, it's very difficult..."

Davis says the collaboration with the school district helps both groups..

".....we want this(project) to be an option for(the class). This option does I think alleviate eliminate some of the strain within the school district. Habitat provides all the materials. All the school district has to do is bring the students here and have them learn..."

Building Trades instructor Russ Germain says Habitat for Humanity needs to build a home as do the students...

"....I think it's going to be two-fold as we're going to fulfill Habitat's objective as well. So it's going to be a win-win for both of us...."

Bob Davis said he thinks if all goes as planned, the Bohns will be in their home sometime next spring.
