Wisconsin's unemployment rate remains remarkably low, but some of the counties with the highest rates remain in the Northwoods.

The June jobless numbers from the state find Menominee county with the state's highest rate at 6.3 percent, followed by Iron county at 5.2.

State labor economist Mitchell Rupp in Wausau gives the Northwoods numbers...

"....Forest is at 5.0, Langlade is at 4.2, Lincoln 3.3, Oneida, 3.4 and Vilas, 3.4...."

Price county's jobless level is 4.1. Many of the Northwoods counties are below unemployment levels from one year ago, but several also saw an uptick from May levels. Rupp says that increase happens each year....

"...This is typically what we see this time of the year. In the month of June, students get out of school, but they don't find a job immediately.and they get included in the unemployment rate number. It's typical the rate spikes up in June...."

Preliminary June 2018 unemployment rates declined or stayed the same in 70 of Wisconsin's 72 counties from June 2017 to June of this year. Forty of the state's 72 counties experienced or tied their lowest June unemployment rate on record since 1990.
