Local Author Used Humor to Fight Cancer Diagnosis

Jay Woolf

A local author who wrote a book about how to use humor to your advantage in a difficult situation will be speaking in Boulder Junction.

Jay Woolf, author of It IS a Laughing Matter, will speak at the Boulder Junction Public Library Thursday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m.

Thirty years ago, Woolf was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Before he was diagnosed, he knew something was horribly wrong. Humor is what helped him get through it.

An example of the kind of humor he uses occurred when he was preparing to head to Chicago to get a biopsy. His wife was helping him pack for the trip and she told him that he didn't have any clean jeans, but he had four pairs of new jeans if he wanted her to pack those.

"I told her to pack two of them," Woolf said. "And that the other two she might be able to return."

Woolf realizes his approach with humor isn’t helpful for everyone, but what made him write the book was the possibility that he might help someone through a tough time.

Jay Woolf will be talking about his book, It IS a Laughing Matter, tonight at the Boulder Junction Public Library at 7:00 p.m.

Woolf’s talk is part of the Northwoods Book Festival, a series of events sponsored by six local libraries to be held throughout the summer.

The six libraries involves are the Boulder Junction Public Library, Frank B. Koller Memorial Library in Manitowish Waters, Mercer Public Library, Minocqua Public Library, Presque Isle Community Library, and Winchester Public Library.

All programs are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
