Local Events Featured During Wisconsin Bike Week

With improving weather, bicyclists are taking to the streets and roadways in increasing numbers. 

The state has designated this as Wisconsin Bike Week, with activities set locally and across the state.

Oneida County Biking and Walking Trails Council President Jackie Cody says there are activities all week including events in Minocqua and trails in the county culminating with an event in Newbold...

"...Friday, for kids, the BMX track is very busy. They're having an Olympic Day free race at the Hodag BMX bike track from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Then the Oneida County Biking and Walking Trails Council decided it was time for a family ride. It was the only thing missing out of the week. It was the only thing missing out of the Newbold town hall..."

The family ride begins at 10 a.m. She says they will bike to the new disc golf course for more recreation activities. Cody says the week shows the growing importance of bikes to Wisconsin's economy...

"Rhinelander and Oneida county is in a position right now to develop those trails and encourage more more tourism in Oneida county through a well-connected trail system which we are advocating for...."

Cody says according to several studies a community that becomes bike friendly can expect to benefit in three ways: increased business, higher property values and improved public health.
