More ATV-UTV Trail Construction Approved For NHAL State Forest

Wisconsin DNR

Another 19 miles of ATV-UTV routes have been approved for the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, within Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties.

In 2017, the state approved 202 miles of trails within the 225,000 acre forest.

A recent request for a variance to the Forest Master Plan was approved.

Forest Recreation Superintendent Sara Pearson says not all of the approved 202 miles of ATV-UTV trails were mapped. She says they ask permission to propose trails once mapping is completed, and the latest approval is an example.

She outlines where the trails are located....

"...It was approved by the Department in October of 2018. That would include trails that connect Woodruff to... Sayner. That is one. Another one we just completed had three different areas on the state forest. One is connecting Woodruff to the Town of Arbor Vitae. One is in the St. Germain area, and the third is connecting the Sayner-Star Lake area..."

Pearson says more trails are being mapped for the future...

"...We will have one other variance coming out at the end of this year, 2019 or early 2020. That will have two small sections, something in the Sugar Camp area and then something in the Woodruff area. I would encourage people to stay tuned, look on the DNR website for that notification..."

About 70 total miles of ATV-UTV routes have been planned in the State Forest.
