News Digest: Fire West Of Minocqua, Mendez Trial Delayed

A fire last night in west of Minocqua damaged Placid Manufacturing. Authorities report the facility is near county “F” and Highway 70 west of Minocqua. The Vilas County Sheriff’s department reported there were no injuries. The fire was out shortly after 7:00 p.m. Fire departments from Lac du Flambeau, Minocqua, Woodruff, and Manitowish Waters all responded in addition to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The Vilas County Sheriff reported there were concerns about varnish and paint chemicals catching fire and creating a dangerous atmosphere. Cause of the fire is being investigated.

Also, the trial of a Minocqua man accused of the death of his wife in 1982 has been delayed. The nearly month-long trial of 70 year old Robin Mendez was delayed after a lengthy piece of written transcripts from the time of the homicide was first presented to Mendez’ attorney. Because the transcript is likely a key part of the evidence, substitute Judge Jil Falstad of Marathon county decided to delay the trial until Mendez has the time to analyze it. Another hearing Monday will determine the new trial dates.
